Millturn

1. What is a millturn?

A millturn, also known as a multitasking machine, is a machine tool that can mill, turn, or grind on a single machine. Therefore, a millturn is a combination of a turning center and a machining center in one machine. The basic configuration of a millturn includes a milling spindle (H1) and a turning spindle (S1). In addition, a sub-turning spindle (S2), a second toolpost (T2), a fourth toolpost (T4), and a tailstock (TL) are sometimes added. A milling spindle is a spindle with an additional automatic tool change function, and is different from a driven-tool mounted on a toolpost. For reference, we define a millturn as one that has a turning spindle and a milling spindle, and can perform turning, facing, or grinding on the same machine; if it does not have a milling spindle, it is not belong to millturns. This part of the definition may differ from others. The types of millturn include (horizontal turning center) millturn, (vertical turning center) millturn, (horizontal machining center) millturn, and (vertical machining center) millturn.

The picture below shows the PUMA SMX3100ST from DN Solutions, the most typical millturn. With the safety door open, there are spindles on the left and right for mounting workpieces, a milling spindle in the center, and a turret at the bottom.

In addition to the main turning spindle(S1) on the left, a millturn may have a sub-turning spindle(S2) on the right. The left and right turning spindle size can be the same size or different.
